On the night of the transport Morgan successfully picks up de Brusac and, reluctantly, takes on de Brusac's wife Helene as well. On the return trip there is a brush with a patrol boat and de Brusac is severely wounded.

Delivering his passengers to the hotel's basement, Morgan finds that Slim has obtained a job singing with the bar's pianist, Cricket. She did not use the plane ticket Morgan provided - choosing instead to stay near Morgan.

Morgan is half-amused, half-irritated by the implications of Slim's decision, but soon has other things on his mind:  it is too dangerous to bring in a doctor to help de Brusac, so it is up to Morgan to remove the bullet from the wounded man.

Morgan watches Slim sing.
