"The Magnificent Lie" (1931)was
Boyer's American film debut. It in no way foretold the stellar career
in store for him - he had a small and unsympathetic role as an actor/con-man
who participates in a nasty deception of the leading man (Ralph Bellamy,
in his first film). "Magnificent Lie" also sent its star Ruth Chatterton's
career into a downslide, and it was French actress Francoise Rosay's last
American film for twenty years. In other words, it was just a gem
for all concerned.
