In Shanghai Boyer once again has Loretta Young as his co-star. He's Dmitri Koslov, an ambitious Eurasian who rises from poverty to become a powerful industrialist, all the while concealing his mixed parentage. Koslov falls in love with an American woman, Barbara (Young), but dares not propose marriage because he is half-Chinese. (OK, so the film shows its age.) Dmitri's reluctance doesn't phase Barbara however; she follows him into the mountainous regions of China - but the "forbidden" alliance between hero and heroine is destined to end on an unhappy note. |
