The High Lama tells Conway,"We need men like you here, to be sure that our community will continue to thrive." Conway begins to understand the revelation that is Shangri-La. The responsibility of taking on the 'silken bonds' that bind the community together is held out to him - "To be gentle and patient; to care for the riches of the mind, to preside in wisdom while the storm rages without."
