One of many Cagney experiences...Bryant Park NYC Summer Film Fest..July 4,2005..'White Heat' on a perfect summer night..20x40 screen..on a folding chair seat 20' away.
I used to dream about being in a movie theater in the '40s to get the front row full effect : and here I was.
BIGGER THAN LIFE THE WAY WE LOVE HIM !! I saw the young, the old, everybody just mesmerized. When he told Virginia Mayo 'Baby, you'd look good in a shower curtain' half the women in the park got real flushed.
Whatta picture. He's around today and Marty Scorsese has his man. Could you imagine him and Daniel Day-Lewis together? All of a sudden, Gangs of New York is not indulgent.
Final note..Since it was the 4th of July and all the East River fireworks were going off, which way do you think the screen was facing ? That's right, the Hudson River side AWAY from the fireworks.
Who needs fireworks when Mr. Electricity blows up the whole friggin' refinery.
Made it Ma, you know the rest.

Donna, It was only a MOVIE, just think of the things that go on in movies nowadays. It seems very mild compared to James Cagneys' hit , doesn't it? He is the GREATEST ACTOR the world has ever seen, and they don't show enough of his movies. I even wrote to TCM about that. I don't want to make you feel bad about your comment, please forgive me.

loved his films, didnt like him though when young especially when he hit Doris Day. but changed as I got older about such a super actor, he was the best

I first saw Cagney's film in a Gangster Film Genre class in college. It was love at first sight. I have great respect for his acting. Wow!
