'Made it,Ma. Top of the world!' The movie is 'White Heat' from 1949. The leader of a gang, his character, Cody Jarrett, is the only one left as he climbs to the top of a globe-shaped oil storage tank. Authorities on the ground use a long-range rifle to shoot Cody. As Cody loses what's left of his sanity, he fires his gun into the tank. As the shot ignites the hugh oil tower, Cody Jarrett cries out the famous line he learned from his late 'Ma.' It marked Cagney's return to Warner Brothers and a return to the 'gangster/tough guy' roles from which he had tried for years to distance himself. The highly successful film, directed by Raoul Walsh, presents the Cagney character as 'a homicidal paranoiac with a mother fixation.' This type of role wasn't new to Cagney; his first movie role (1930) in 'Sinner's Holiday,' cast him as an overgrown juvenile delinquent with an intense bond with his Ma. Patrick McGilligan, author of 'Cagney - The Actor as Auteur,' said, 'Cagney's 'Ma' was to crop up frequently after 'Sinner's Holiday' - it may be that no other American actor has been shadowed so closely on screen by his nearest and dearest of kin.'

Can anyone tell me the name of the movie where he's on top of a burning building and say something like, 'Look Ma, I'm on top of the world'? Thanks

James Cagney was my favorite-YANKEE DOODLE DANDY!!! I spoke with Marge Zimmerman after his passing. She was kind enough to send me, without my asking, what is purported to be his last autographed photo, and she included photos of his farm near Poughkeepie and some other memorabilia. He was tremendous!
